Handel and Vivaldi

Handel and Vivaldi shared an astounding 56 years of life on earth, yet never met. At the height of their careers, separated by some 950 miles in London and Venice respectively, Handel and Vivaldi’s music reflected everything that surrounded them. Handel, always dignified and highly skilled, was Beethoven’s favorite composer; Vivaldi, daring, flashy, and breathtaking, captivated Bach, who borrowed freely from him. This first CMS pairing of these Baroque masters is a study in contrasts, and a solid evening of terrific musical entertainment.

Chamber sonatas, concerti, and arias by Handel & Vivaldi.

Holy Week Concert:
The Leçons de Tenebres of François Couperin

April 11, 2022 | 6:00pm

The Chapel at St. Bartholomew’s Church
New York, NY

Holy Week Concert:
The Leçons de Ténèbres of François Couperin

Olivia Sue Greene & Aine Hakamatsuka, sopranos
Adam Young, viola da gamba
Paolo Bordignon, harpsichord

In the long, rich tradition of singing the Lamentations of Jeremiah in Holy Week, Couperin’s setting is at the pinnacle of Baroque vocal repertoire. Rather than lying in contemplation of the darkest hours of the passion, Couperin’s music transports the listener with the luminous sound of two soprano voices, combined with the crystalline beauty of the harpsichord and the expressive richness of the viol. The intimacy, acoustic, and architectural beauty of St. Bartholomew’s Chapel makes it an ideal venue for this repertoire.

L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato
Music of George Frideric Handel

Mark Morris Dance Group
MMDG Music Ensemble
The Choir of Trinity Wall Street with Downtown Voices
Conducted by Colin Fowler
Choreography by Mark Morris

On a darkened stage, two dancers collide in a burst of light, music, and color—and from this encounter, an enchanting world is born. Hailed as Mark Morris’s undisputed masterwork since its US premiere here at BAM in 1990, L’Allegro conjures with radiant simplicity a mythic landscape of graces, gods, and lovers. Set to Handel’s soaring interpretation of Milton’s Arcadian poetry, Morris’s choreography draws deep from Greek and Roman motifs while remaining, somehow, timeless.
