Platinum Jubilee

Recitals on the Jacob Hilbus chamber organ (ca. 1820-25), one of the earliest pipe organs made in the U.S.

Jacob Hilbus (b. 1787 in Westphalia, Germany), first organbuilder in Washington, D.C. advertised services of repairs & tuning to organs, pianos, and violins (c.1810). He was best known as the piano tuner to the White House from 1817 (under Pres. James Monroe) until his death in 1858.

Parsons Pipe Organ builders is restoring this organ, one of three extant by Hilbus. The other two are at the Smithsonian and St. John’s Episcopal Church (Broad Creek, VA). It was owned by Wm. Cranch, whose signature is on one of the bellows weights. Cranch was appointed Chief Judge of the U. S. Circuit Court by John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.

SANTA FE CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL

This crowd-pleaser of a program features five standout concertos by Italian Baroque composer Antonio Vivaldi, who famously wrote more than 400 such works, including ones that influenced his German contemporary, Johann Sebastian Bach. Here, Vivaldi’s flute and violin concertos showcase the virtuosic talents of soloists Tara Helen O’Connor, Ida Kavafian, Cho-Liang Lin, Daniel Phillips, and Danbi Um.

Two of Sarasota’s finest step into the spotlight with a program that basks in the magical sounds of their ancient instruments.
Accompanied by strings and harpsichord, Sarasota Orchestra principal oboe Bobby Nunes and principal harp Phoebe Powell each perform a concerto for their instrument by baroque master G.F. Handel. The two also join forces for Debussy’s enchanting Album of Five Pieces for Oboe and Harp.

Stepping out from behind the choir stalls, St. Bartholomew’s Choir presents a program of concert repertoire, including Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, Francis Poulenc’s Gloria, and music of Samuel Barber. As well as singing every Sunday, our professional choir has appeared on NPR, CBS, CNN, and CNBC. A recent TV appearance on Now Hear This, presented by PBS Great Performances, was hailed as “among the highlights of the show” by the Wall Street Journal.
