The premiere of British composer Jonathan Dove’s one act opera performed by acclaimed baritone Douglas Williams to a text by Italo Calvino. Calvino inverts the Orpheus myth; the "other Euridice" of the title is Pluto’s consort, Persephone, lured to earth from the underworld by Orpheus’s spellbinding music, leaving Pluto to deliver a passionate harangue to the audience about the treachery of "the world outside." Taking the form of a Baroque cantata, the opera for solo baritone is accompanied by strings and harpsichord, while offstage woodwind picks out the distant voices of Orpheus and Euridice.
